UNISA Master’s And Doctoral Bursary 2024

The UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary is designed to support both international and South African students in their research activities and tuition fees. The bursary is contingent upon the availability of funds, meeting eligibility criteria, and maintaining satisfactory academic performance.

Bursary Coverage

The bursary will cover allowances for Research Essentials and Tuition fees for 2 consecutive years, subject to second-year re-application being approved. The coverage varies based on the type of degree pursued:

  • Master’s Degree by Coursework: Covers tuition fees and research allowance up to R 25,000 over the first 2 consecutive years.
  • Master’s Degree by Research and Experimental Research: Covers tuition fees and research allowance up to R55,000 over the first 3 consecutive years.
  • Doctoral Degree by Experimental Research: Covers tuition fees and research allowance up to R120,000 over the first 4 consecutive years.
  • Doctoral Degree by Research: Covers tuition fees and research allowance up to R80,000 over the first 4 consecutive years.

  • Applications are accepted only through the myUnisa link, and emails or hard copy submissions will not be considered.
  • Temporary registration is required upon successful application activation.
  • Bursary renewal is necessary for returning awardees.
  • Ethical clearance certification is mandatory for accessing the full research allowance.

Exclusions

The bursary does not cover funds for additional years, repeating/failed modules for Master’s by Coursework students, historic debt, or different/additional NQF Level 9/10 qualifications.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary, applicants must meet specific criteria, including:

New Bursary Applicants

  • Submission and approval of Research Proposal by January 31, 2024, for international and South African Master’s and Doctoral research students.
  • Master’s by Coursework students must pass two coursework modules by January 31, 2024, and submit an approved Research Proposal.

Returning PG Bursary Awardees

  • Continuing research study in the previously registered/funded NQF level 9/10 qualification.
  • Compliance with academic performance and bursary guidelines.

Ineligibility

The following individuals are not eligible to apply for the UNISA Master’s and Doctoral Bursary:

  • Permanent staff members of UNISA
  • First-year Master’s and Doctoral students
  • Students enrolled for non-degree purpose programs and special study programs
  • Students with a PG degree at the same or higher NQF level
