Unisa Law Alumnus Inspired To Represent The Vulnerable
Advocate Percy Mthombeni, Unisa alumnus and former staff member, praises Unisa for instilling critical qualities relevant to his legal career. As a lawyer, you must demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and independence. Because Unisa is an open and distance e-learning institution, these qualities developed easily for me since I was expected to demonstrate them during my studies.”
Unisa Law Alumnus Inspired To Represent The Vulnerable
Mthombeni graduated with a LLB degree in 2017 from Unisa and is currently pursuing a master’s degree (LLM) there. In pursuit of a law career, he was inspired by his passion for human rights activism. The fact that he was born into a poverty-stricken community made him realize that despite the Constitution’s enshrined rights, the rights of the poor and other vulnerable groups are not always respected. Mthombeni was then motivated to act as a voice for the vulnerable, regardless of their status.

His gratitude goes to Unisa for giving him the opportunity to work in its Department of Legal Services while he was a member of its staff. The experience enhanced my understanding of the law, particularly labour law and contract law. These areas are also part of my practice at the moment,” he says. In Mthombeni’s opinion, Unisa is the best institution and makes dreams come true.

A member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates and Advocates Group Twenty One, Mthombeni is also an advocate of the High Court of South Africa. Entrepreneurship is also one of his passions.
He congratulates Unisa on its 150th anniversary celebration and encourages it to continue to open its doors to more people, especially in South Africa and the African continent. According to Mthombeni, “Unisa’s contribution to humanity is unrivaled, and this contribution will also be critical in the future as technology drives society’s evolution.”
