Although UNISA Chancellor, former President Dr. Thabo Mbeki, was not present, his commitment was well represented by Dr. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Chairperson of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, emphasizing the university’s commitment to making higher education accessible to all.

With over 150,000 students benefiting from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), UNISA plays a critical role in diminishing socio-economic disparities in education. The students supported often come from backgrounds marked by significant financial challenges, which persist as they near graduation.

Financial Commitments and Future Goals

The UNISA Foundation Board of Trustees has allocated R13.8 million to aid 3,415 students who are close to completing their degrees. The future funding needs are substantial, with R47 million estimated to be required in 2025 to assist 3,274 students, showcasing the escalating demand for financial aid.

During a discussion about the impact of the Golf Challenge, UNISA Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Puleng LenkaBula, highlighted the indispensable role of partnerships in driving the success of these initiatives.
