Unisa alumni gathered in Gqeberha on Friday, 17 March, to connect with one another, network, and explore ways to collaborate.

Unisa Eastern Cape Regional Director Morale Ngoang opened the event and urged the alumni to take advantage of the networking opportunities to establish more cohesion between Unisa alumni.

In order to achieve their shared goals, Ngoang stressed the importance of building a strong alumni community. “Unisa alumni are part of a proud and accomplished community,” he said. “We are here to support you and provide resources to help you succeed in your personal and professional lives.”

Frankie Mojapelo, Acting Director of the Unisa Foundation and Alumni Relations, spoke at the event about the University’s 150th anniversary celebrations and future plans.

The illustrious history of Unisa, which has pioneered distance education in Africa for 150 years, was emphasized by Mojapelo. Additionally, he outlined Unisa’s future plans, including identifying niches that will make the university a leader in various fields.

Mojapelo said, “We are proud of our heritage and excited about our future.”  The president thanked the alumni for their continued support and ambassadorship of the university.

Alumni members in attendance expressed their enthusiasm for the university’s future plans after hearing Mojapelo’s words. Unisa ambassadors discussed various ways to contribute to the institution’s growth and success.

A platform for networking would benefit members in their quest to connect with fellow alumni and build relationships that could lead to new job opportunities and business ventures.

Yonela Skotoyi, the newly elected chapter convenor, also shared her vision for the Gqeberha alumni chapter at the event. Unisa graduates need to focus on community engagement and work together to increase their employability, said Skotoyi.

“I think it’s great that the alumni chapter focuses on employability and community engagement,” said one attendee. In return for the support we received during our studies, it is important for us to give back to the community.”

Ultimately, the event was a great success, with alumni feeling proud and committed to their shared goals afterward. With Unisa celebrating its 150th anniversary and planning for the future, events like this will play an important role in fostering collaboration and building stronger connections between alumni.
