ARWU Ranks UNISA in the Top Eight Best Universities in South Africa

Based on transparent methodology and objective third-party data, ARWU has rated the world’s top universities annually since 2003.

In addition to being the precursor of global university rankings, it is also recognized for its trustworthiness. Over 2 500 institutions were scrutinized this year, and the top 1000 universities were announced.

Rank World Universities

The University of Pretoria, the University of Pretoria, UNISA, and North-West University continue to rank among the best South African universities along with the University of Cape Town, the University of the Witwatersrand, and Stellenbosch University.

To rank world universities, ARWU uses six objective indicators, such as the number of Nobel Prizes and Field Medals won by alumni and staff, the number of articles published in journals of nature and science, the number of highly cited researchers and articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and the performance per capita.

Puleng LenkaBula’s vision for the university was reflected in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities, as well as other recent rankings and endorsements by reputable institutions in higher education.

UNISA Position

She assumed the position of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Unisa when she set her vision for the university. With LenkaBula, the institution is positioned to become an excellence center and a lever for optimum global knowledge participation.

She has led the university to become competitive globally by spreading the university’s impact beyond the local context and continent.

She shares her thoughts on the team effort that led to the ranking: “Congratulations Unisans, you have made us proud once again. Thank you for all your hard work and resilience.”

We are determined to reclaim our position at the top of tertiary education in South Africa and the African continent.
