Thanks to UNISA Donation Learners Get a Technological Boost. In a landmark initiative on August 13, 2024, the University of South Africa (Unisa) embarked on a transformative educational project that promises to enhance the learning landscape significantly.

Spearheaded by the esteemed Prof Mpho-Entle Modise, the Women in Research (WiR) community project made a substantial contribution to Willowridge High School by donating 80 pre-owned laptops. This act is part of a broader commitment to augment educational resources and facilitate access to learning opportunities.

The Vision Behind the Donation

Prof Modise, an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies at Unisa’s College of Education, and a leader in the WiR project, envisions this initiative as a stepping stone towards integrating digital portfolios into high school education. The goal is to enrich the academic experience of learners by introducing them early to technologies that are prevalent in higher education settings.

Understanding E-Portfolios

An e-portfolio is essentially a digital platform where students can create, share, and evaluate content collaboratively. It transcends the traditional use of digital tools for merely storing assignments by fostering a community-oriented learning environment where students engage actively with their peers and educators.

The Immediate Benefits and Long-Term Impact

By incorporating e-portfolios in the classroom, educators can better prepare students for the technological demands of higher education. Prof Patience Mudau, acting Chair of the Department at Unisa, emphasizes the critical role of such resources in cultivating 21st-century skills among students. The laptops will enable learners to access educational materials, complete assignments, and develop digital literacy—a foundational skillset for success in the modern world.

The initiative also encourages the adoption of artificial intelligence in teaching, viewing AI as a significant opportunity for innovation in education. On May 20, 2024, Unisa collaborated with Microsoft to conduct a training workshop for around 25 teachers from Willowridge High School. The workshop, led by Banele Mngqi from Microsoft, covered the creation and management of e-portfolios using Microsoft SWAY and introduced the educators to the applications of generative AI in teaching.

The Broader Educational Community

This initiative is not just about technological integration but also aims to empower educators and students to embrace new methods that enhance teaching and learning practices. The involvement of key figures like Dr Jonas Kotota, Deputy Principal of Willowridge High School, was instrumental in motivating educators to participate actively in this transformative project.

The project saw contributions from various stakeholders within Unisa, including Letlhogonolo Mogopodi from the ICT department and Tiro Lentswe from Finance Assets, who ensured the laptops were in perfect condition for donation. The event garnered support from Microsoft representatives and officials from the Department of Basic Education, highlighting the collaborative nature of this initiative.
